Latviai / Mitkiškės Hillfort aka the Castle Hill

The Hillfort aka the Castle Hill can be found on the right shore of the nameless affluent of the Sukra, on the highland cape surrounded by deep unnamed streams. These streams run towards the northern end of the hillfort and its valleys, at the northeastern edge of Kazokiškės Forest.

The site at the top of the Castle Hill is shaped like a triangle and is longitudinal, reaching 58 m from north to south. In its southern edge, the hilltop is 28 m in width. The hillfort has a cultural layer, where pieces of brushed pottery were found. The site is separated from the nearby highland in the south by three ravines: the first outer ravine is 0.9 m deep, the second ravine behind the rampart is 2.2 m deep and the third one is 2 m deeper and located just next to the second one. The central part of the ravines measuring 3 m in width is filled with felled trees. The site is also separated from the nearby highland in the south by three ramparts. The first one is just behind the first ravine and measures 1 m in height. The second follows after the second ravine and is also 1 m high. The third rampart measures 3 m in height from the bottom of the third ravine and 0.5 m in height from the hillfort top. The hillfort has steep slopes that measure 17 m in height. The hillfort is covered in very dense brushes and overgrowth that have overtaken the area after felling the spruces. The hillfort dates back to the first millennium and the beginning of the second millennium.

The diggings at the hillfort revealed a treasure trove of Castle Hill coins and silver alloys. The treasure is displayed at Kernavė Museum of History.
